“In the folding and manipulation of delicate paper, there is reflected the growth and unfurling of a flower from seed to bloom. Susan Beech’s exquisitely precise paper representations of floral forms allude to the long tradition of botanical art, emerging from their neutral backgrounds into defiant three-dimensionality. Hand-painted to forge an uncanny realism that nevertheless celebrates the touch of the artist’s hand, these fragile specimens speak to the simultaneous vulnerability and strength of flowers.”

PROCESS

My practice is rooted in the meticulous creation of paper botanicals, a medium through which I explore the beauty and complexity, order and chaos of the natural world and highlight a moment of stillness within this.

To make my work I primarily use premium crepe paper and floral wire. I intricately manipulate the paper, folding, cutting and stretching to create realistic, complex botanical forms. Ink, pastel and paint is often used to create a soft gradation of colour.

I closely observe and seek to capture the gestures and essence of each plant’s individuality, using these gestures to tell part of the story. I work by studying real botanical specimens where possible, which helps me to create the finest of details.I also take inspiration from photographs and botanical publications in order to create a realistic piece.

I graduated in Fine Art Printmaking from the University of Brighton and am based in Hove, UK.

Currently I have two pieces of work included in an exhibition ‘Flowers- Flora in Contemporary Art & Culture’ at the Saatchi Gallery in London running from February until August 2025.
